ICLEF makes donation to Indiana’s “First Responders” – Task Force 1

By Scott King, Program Director

In honor of Indiana’s first responders on the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, ICLEF made a $1000 contribution to Indiana Task Force 1, the local public safety team mobilized once an affected disaster area exceeds their own response capabilities and officially requests outside help.  Indiana Task Force 1 was one of the many brave emergency response units deployed to the site of the World Trade Center to assist in the recovery and rescue efforts in 2001.  The funding will go to further statewide training efforts of the unit.

ICLEF President Mark McNeely presented the donation to William Brown, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief and Commander of Indiana Task Force 1 along with Sean Sutton, Carmel Firefighter / EMT and Indiana Task Force 1 communications specialist, on the grounds of the newly dedicated Indianapolis 9/11 memorial. The Indianapolis memorial site is next to a fire station on West Ohio Street, and stands in remembrance of the firefighters who ran into those buildings that day and gave their lives to save others.

“I can think of no more appropriate place to show our appreciation for Indiana’s own first responders,” stated McNeely. “We are truly fortunate to have these talented individuals and their resources available to us during our times of need.”

Under the authority of FEMA, 62 men and women, firefighters and civilians, make up Indiana Task Force 1.  In addition to their courageous efforts in New York City, Indiana Task Force 1 has also responded more recently to the nation’s needs during natural disasters such as Hurricanes Ike and Gustav in 2008 as well as to those Indiana communities devastated by flooding.
